ELL Program

ICSV offers a comprehensive English Language Learners(ELL) program for students still learning the English language. Please see the program descriptions below for more information.

Elementary ELL
Students who qualify for ELL classes will meet with the ELL teacher daily for 40 minutes in place of taking a German class. Each grade meets separately with the teacher during their scheduled time.  Each grade level has from 2-6 ELL students. Since the groups meet as a grade level, they are multi-level in their language proficiencies. Beginner students meet one-on-one or in small groups for extra time with the ELL teacher at times determined by the ELL and classroom teachers.

Middle School – Beginner ELL
This program will introduce the English language and focus on developing basic skills in order to function in the general classroom. All language areas will be addressed in English: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Vocabulary for the content areas of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Bible will be taught. This is 50% of their schedule. The classes are content based so that students can develop academic vocabulary in addition to social/story vocabulary. These classes are in place of the mainstream classes in the same content areas; Language is in place of German. Students are mainstreamed for math, PE, and all electives.  The ELL teachers will also guide them to view stories, projects, and conversations from a Christian perspective.

Middle School – Intermediate ELL
The Intermediate program will assist the students in developing their understanding and usage of basic grammatical, reading, writing, pronunciation, and listening comprehension skills towards a more advanced level. Therefore, the students will grow in their social and academic areas and be able to more fully participate in their mainstream classes. Students are in an ELL English class in place of a mainstream English class and an ELL Language class in place of German. The ELL teachers will also guide them to view literature, projects, and conversations from a Christian perspective.

Middle School – Advanced ELL
The Advanced program consists of one English class. At this point the students are mostly fluent and are able to be mainstreamed in their regular content classes. The students are placed in an ELL Language class instead of German. This class has an intense focus on English Literature and grammar. The ELL teachers will also guide them to view literature, projects, and conversations from a Christian perspective.

High School ELL
The ability to understand, process, and communicate effectively in English is essential for gaining an education at an international school in Vienna. The High School ELL class will therefore assist the students in developing their understanding and usage of basic and advanced English language skills. The language and skills covered will work towards meeting Standard 2 of the PreK-12 English Language Proficiency Standards published by TESOL, Inc. in 2006.  Through meeting this standard, the students will grow in their English language skills and be able to find success in their core curriculum classes. ELL teachers will also guide them to view language and literature from a Christian perspective.
