New Building Ideas

A couple of weeks ago, I was awakened by a horrific sound coming from the kitchen. I ran in to find my husband unable to breathe. It was just past midnight, and he had been suffering from a terrible cough, when he woke to find himself unable to get enough oxygen into his lungs. Obviously, he was in a panic, for without air, one cannot live. After a time of struggle, he was able to calm down, but he still knew that something was terribly wrong. During all of our years together, we have never had to call an ambulance, so here I was in a German speaking country during the middle of the night trying to communicate what had just happened.

I have to say that the two EMTs were wonderful! They spoke good English, were calm and professional, and were even able to joke with us Americans, knowing that we’d have huge bottles of over-the-counter meds that we had brought back from the US. ☺ It turns out that Greg’s vocal cords were so inflamed that they were blocking his airway. He also was suffering from a viral infection in his lungs, thus compounding the problem.

This situation got me to thinking about a little girl that was born to some of our friends. She had been diagnosed while her mother was still pregnant with a birth defect that was so severe that it literally made life outside the womb impossible. Even so, the parents carried their little girl to full term, and gave birth to her in the hospital. They thought that she would only live for minutes or hours, but she hung on for eight days. One of the family’s friends wrote a poem at that time, stating that her very breath was praise to God. I’ve remembered that for all these years, and just recently found a post by a lady named Daje Morris from 2017. Its title was “to breathe is to worship God.” She said that the Hebrew term for God is YHWH (Yahweh/Jehovah), which are the two syllables in the sounds of breathing in and then breathing out. In other words, every time that we breathe, we are giving praise to God with our very breath!

There are numerous times throughout the Bible where breath is used almost as a synonym for life. In Genesis, we are told that “the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the BREATH OF LIFE.” In the book of Acts, the Apostle Paul says that “He himself gives to all people LIFE AND BREATH.” In the book of Psalms, we read, “I will pray as long as I have BREATH!” So, yes, breathing is basically synonymous with life, so as long as I have the BREATH to live and to speak, I will praise the Lord.

So, that horrific night where I watched my husband struggle for every breath, was a visible reminder that it is God who gives us every single breath that we take.

This is the air I breathe, your holy presence living in me.
This is my daily bread, your very word spoke to me.
And I, I’m desperate for you, and I’m lost without you.

What an Exciting Time to be Part of the ICSV Community!

ICSV is excited to announce that the school has purchased the 5736 square meter property immediately adjacent to our current campus. This land purchase has been in process for two years, and we are delighted that plans to expand the campus can now begin.

Let me tell you how this all came about. In May of 2017, two businessmen asked to meet with me. They turned out to be land developers who were interested in purchasing our current property. Their plan was to buy all the property on this side of Wagramer Strasse in order to build apartments and office space. I learned from them that the property next door to ours, where Sixt and Lucky Car have buildings, was going up for private auction. I knew that the school had tried a number of times to purchase this property, so when they said it was going up for sale, I replied with, “We don’t want to sell our school. We want to buy that property!”

The odds of outbidding a development company were not in our favor; however, we spoke with numerous banks, consulted with several developers, etc. and the School Board placed our bid for the property. The whole process was covered with much prayer, asking God to show favor on ICSV and to make our dream become a reality. In the end, the School Board submitted a proposal that was approved and chosen. God was indeed at work! For the last two years, we have been working to complete the purchase, and today we can say that ICSV owns both the 175 and now 177 Wagramer Strasse properties!

As part of the school’s strategic vision for the future, the plan is to build a school that will accommodate 500 to 600 students. The project will include a gymnasium/auditorium, state-of-the-art science labs, a fine arts wing, learning commons, classrooms, cafeteria, and more. We are even looking at the possibility of putting a playing field on the roof! The campus expansion will ensure that ICSV can continue to provide a high-quality, individualized, Christian education to an increasing number of students that will be able to impact the nations of the world.

We would like to invite you to a parent meeting on Thursday, May 16, at 6:00 pm to meet with members of the School Board and administration to brainstorm ideas, to make suggestions, and to ask questions about the building project. Students will also be given an opportunity to be involved in the planning process. Today we give thanks to our Almighty God who is able to do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine. I can’t wait to see how God goes before us over the next few years to make our new school a reality. This really is an exciting time to be part of the ICSV community!

‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to trust God even during the hard times. Yesterday I shared with the staff the story behind the old hymn ’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus. This hymn was written by a lady named Lousia M. R. Stead back in the 1800s. Some of the words to the song are as follows:

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise, just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more!

C. Michale Hawn writes this about what led to Mrs. Stead writing this hymn:

“When [their] child was four years of age, the family decided one day to enjoy the sunny beach at Long Island Sound, New York. While eating their picnic lunch, they suddenly heard cries of help and spotted a drowning boy in the sea. Mr. Stead charged into the water. As often happens, however, the struggling boy pulled his rescuer under water with him, and both drowned before the terrified eyes of wife and daughter. Out of her ‘why?’ struggle with God during the ensuring days glowed these meaningful words from the soul of Louisa Stead.”

In the hymn, Mrs. Stead acknowledged that the only way to get through this tragedy was to cling to God’s promises. She reminded us that she could trust God even in the hard times because He had proven Himself faithful so many times before. And in the end she prayed for even more grace to be able trust God in the future.

This week marks the anniversary of the school’s tremendous loss of one of our beloved students, Mongameli. It is at times like these that we are reminded of God’s promises and that we must  trust Him as the Almighty God who loves us more than we could ever imagine. This morning at our staff devotion time, Ms. Madu defined trust as “surrendering the outcome that you feel is the only good outcome that a good God should write.” Isn’t it amazing that we often think we know what is best for us, even more so than God? As a kid I memorized Proverbs 3:5 and 6 that say, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” This week when I was pondering trust, I saw that this verse can also be translated into English as “in all your ways submit to Him.” I must admit that I don’t like that version as much. Submitting our own will, even to God, just isn’t exactly what we want to do. That’s probably why we find it so hard to trust Him sometimes.

I encourage you to spend some time going through the Bible to see how many verses you can find that talk about trusting God. It’s a great study that helps us to take our eyes off our circumstances and focus them on the Sovereign God.

A huge thanks to all who planned and attended the picnic and soccer game that were held in Mongameli’s memory on Wednesday. The high school team won the King Nangu Trophy, which the Nangu family will hold onto for us until next year when there will be a rematch. Thank you, Ms. Gerdes, for caring for our school community by ensuring that we support each other as we continue to grieve our great loss. Please keep the Nangu family in your prayers.

Professional Development for God’s Glory

Professional Development for God’s Glory

One of ICSV’s goals in our Strategic Vision is to build up our faculty and staff by “fostering a culture of continual improvement.” We have been working hard to develop a strong professional development program that provides in-house professional development, makes available conferences and seminars, and allows individuals to take additional university courses or to receive training in their area of expertise. On April 11, the entire ICSV faculty and administration travelled to Prague in order to spend three days at the ACSI Teacher Conference. This was a time of professional growth and networking with other Christian educators from around the world. Three of our teachers, Christine Sipos, Greg Brobst, and Joel Alba, had the opportunity to present sessions on using technology in the classroom and how to roll out a BYOD program.

Today, 49% of our teaching staff hold advanced degrees, and we are excited to share that we have several staff members who are enrolled in or have recently completed masters and doctoral programs. Mrs. Barbara Dax received her Masters of Science in Information and Library Studies (with distinction) from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. She was awarded the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (UK Library Association) Award for having the highest grades in her field of study. Miss Devan Mizzoni has just completed her Master’s degree. Devan says that she has always wanted to pursue a Master’s degree in International Development and was pleased when she had the opportunity to do so here at Uni Wien. Miss Mizzoni attends church at New City Wien.

The desire to use one’s God-given gifts is not limited to the ICSV staff. Board member, Anna Gryskiewicz, recently defended her doctoral dissertation at Southeastern University, earning her Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership. Her husband, Tony, is also a doctoral student, studying at Biola University. Dr. Gryskiewicz says that it was a middle school teacher who believed in her and encouraged her to “dream big!” Today she is passionate about teaching, especially those who experience learning challenges. She also loves training and equipping young people to fulfill their God-given calling. She and her husband serve on the pastoral team at Vienna Christian Center as youth pastors.

We extend our congratulations to Dr. Gryskiewicz, Mrs. Dax, and Miss Mizzoni for showing grit and grace through the education process and for glorifying God with the lovely minds that God has given to them. We extend our thanks to Miss Sipos, Mr. Brobst, and Mr. Alba for sharing their knowledge and experience with other Christian educators from around the globe. Part of my personal vision for ICSV is that we will become a leader among the international Christian schools. I believe that it is our responsibility to bless others as God has blessed us here in Vienna. Our staff members are doing this very thing.

Running with the Bulls

Running with the Bulls

And I am free to run,
I am free to dance,
I am free to live for You,
I am free, I am free!

Last night I got to run around the MP with everyone who came out for Praise Night. Teachers and students and parents and the SEW team all ran around singing “I am free!” I laughed because Mr. and Mrs. Loucks were out there running with the kids, too. I told them that I thought we could check off “running with the bulls” from our bucket list.

What was all the running and dancing and singing about? There are many verses in the Bible that talk about being free. The Apostle John simply says, “So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” The Apostle Paul reminded the Romans that they have been set free from sin, with the result being eternal life. He again writes, this time to those living in Galatia, that they were called to be free, but that they were given that freedom so that they could serve one another in love.

I have a quote hanging on my wall that says, “Christians are, indeed, free. Free to serve, free to love our neighbors and enemies alike. We are free ‘to follow the Lamb wherever He goes,’ even if it means giving up our earthly freedoms in the process.” This is a daily reminder to me that I have been freed from the penalty of sin because of Jesus’ sacrifice for me on the cross. This freedom was shown to me because of God’s grace, completely unmerited on my part. Because of this, I am to extend that grace to others by freely loving and serving them.

If you walked through the MP Room this week you would have heard the elementary students making the funniest noises and singing the craziest songs. Jerry and Michaela Jacoby come to ICSV every two years to run a Spiritual Emphasis Week with our kids. They have been traveling around the world for their entire career using song, Bible characters, sock chickens named Elmer and Popcorn, and jokes to teach Christian character and biblical principles. Something that Jerry pointed out was how the children would cheer when others were chosen to go up on stage. He remarked about how unselfish that was. Well, on Thursday as the children were leaving chapel, one boy tripped and fell as they raced to get downstairs. Instead of taking advantage of that and running on ahead, his friend stopped and asked him if he was okay, and then they proceeded to go down the stairs together. This is grace. This is using one’s freedom not for personal benefit but by looking out for the needs of others before our own. I couldn’t help but smile seeing our elementary students demonstrating this profound truth at such a young age.

Next week is a three-day week for students, as our entire teaching staff is traveling together to Prague for the ACSI Teacher Conference. This will be a time of encouragement and refreshment for the faculty, but also a time of growth and challenge. As soon as we return, we will be heading into Holy Week, the week between Palm Sunday and Easter when Christians remember how Jesus willingly gave up His freedom to take upon Himself the sin of the whole world. I wish you all a most blessed Easter as we can say:

Through You the kingdom comes
Through You the battle’s won
Through You the price is paid
Through You I’m not afraid
Through You there’s victory
Because of You my soul sings
I am free!
